Purpose and Aim of the Qualification
The Pearson BTEC Level 2 Award for Close Protection Operatives in the Private Security Industry (Refresher) is for learners who are currently working as Close Protection Operatives and wish to renew their SIA Close Protection license. Learners will update their
knowledge of door supervision responsibilities applicable to the role of Close Protection Operatives. They will learn to identify terrorist threats and respond to suspicious behaviour. They will gain skills in the application of physical intervention
techniques as well as the associated underpinning knowledge, including safety-critical aspects to consider when undertaking physical interventions.
This course provides learners with a refresher on the following topics:
Unit 1: Principles of working as a door supervisor in the private security industry (Refresher).
This unit covers safety-critical elements of the door supervisor role:
how to conduct effective searches; how to keep vulnerable people safe;
how to recognise terror threats and the role of the security operative in the event of a threat;
and how to safeguard the public from incidents of spiking.
Assessment
Assessment for this unit is in two parts:
An externally set and marked MCQ exam made up of 35 questions (55 minutes)
Pass mark = 25 (71 per cent).
Assessment of practical skills.
Unit 2: Application of Physical Intervention Skills in the Private Security Industry (Refresher)
This unit covers both the knowledge and practical skills required for the use of physical intervention in the private security industry. It provides an introduction to best practice, including restrictive and non-restrictive interventions and the implications of their use; the hazards of using physical interventions and how to reduce the risk of harm;
and the actions that must be taken after an incident.
This unit also provides an opportunity to develop non-aggressive physical intervention skills to protect yourself and others, as well as non-restrictive and restrictive skills for use when standing, holding, or escorting individuals.
Assessment
Assessment for this unit is in two parts:
MCQ exam made up of 30 questions (45 minutes), Pass mark = 80 per cent

Unit 3: Application of Physical Intervention Skills for Close Protection Operatives in the Private Security Industry (Refresher)
This unit equips learners with the essential skills and knowledge required of close protection operatives. It covers incident analysis to identify and mitigate risks, emphasising the importance of narrowing concentric layers of protection. Learners will explore alternative methods to the use of force, focusing on ethical, legal and professional considerations.
The unit also includes training in physical intervention skills, non-pain-compliant self-protection techniques, and methods to safeguard the inner cordon.
By mastering these outcomes, operatives will be well-prepared to protect principals from various threats and ensure their safety in high-risk situations.
Assessment
Assessment for this unit is in two parts:
MCQ exam made up of 20 questions (30 minutes), Pass mark = 80 per cent
Assessment of practical skills.
How long will it take me to achieve this qualification?
The course is run over 3 days.
Pre-Course Entry Requirements.
Learners will have completed a licence-linked close protection qualification and hold a CP licence.
Completed the ACT Blue and Orange Certificates within 12 months of the course start date.
Completed and passed a literacy test (pre-course learning pack) provided by us.
Completed the distance learning pack (pre-course learning pack) provided by us.
You are required to have the correct ID to be accepted on to the course.
This includes:
1 x Group A & 2 x Group B documents listed on the SIA website.

First Aid Training
When applying for the Close Protection (Refresher) course, you will be required to produce evidence that you have attained a minimum of a recognised
Level 3 First Aid at Work
award.
You should present your valid first aid certificate to ATG before you start your training.
If you do not have a recognised first aid award, we can arrange this for you.
This is in addition to the minimum 45 guided learning hours of knowledge and practical skills training.
