Working with Schools in the Outdoors

Target Group

We can offer progamme flexibility aligned to the needs of the individuals, schools, and local authorities. As such, we have a wide variety of military employability programmes ranging from half-day provision to 6-week provision. Individuals will gain either unit, award or, certificate accreditation depending on the length of provision.

Activities

We have extensive experience in delivering training with a military focus and providing military experiences. All tutors and assessors have a military background, whilst some are currently serving in the Reserves. This experience and insight allows us to create a military learning environment with tutors reflecting on experience and knowledge gained in the military.

As an Armed Forces Employer Recognition Scheme Silver award holder, this allows us to maintain excellent ongoing links with the Armed Forces and public services. As such, we can offer taster days, visits to various military sites and outdoor activities, as well as technical and military team-building tasks.

Inclusion

At the beginning of their provision, all participants will receive an initial assessment that will provide information on their backgrounds, education experience, barriers, and ambitions. This will allow us to identify individual needs and, set SMART targets aligned to their long-term aims and objectives. 1-2-1 coaching sessions will take place throughout the provision to monitor their progress against the targets and re-align these if required. This also ensures that our provision is continually aligned to individual needs.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 11 years of age. The unit and the related qualification have been developed as work-based and can be completed through a series of different roles or tasks.

Progression Opportunities

The outdoors sector has to a very large extent adopted an employment profile that has an entry point of 18 years of age. This exists for a number of reasons. Many similar technical qualifications used to underpin competence can only complete assessment for those 18 or over. Employers gain clear messages from parents and schools that outdoors sector staff who look after children participants, often in residential settings, should be adults when taking on responsibility for children. Some respected Sector associations such as the British Activity Providers Association (BAPA) have robust outdoor centre accreditation schemes, and there is a requirement that accredited centres will only employ staff who are 18 years old or over. However, it is acknowledged that this 18 only rule may not always be the case. Examples might include voluntary organisations, where staff maybe 16 or 17 years of age.

This program can lead to a Level 3 Outdoors Apprenticeship framework.
